Happy Friday Sun City Families!
I am going to do a couple “blog” posts on two things that I am looking forward to adding during this cross-country season. The first aspect that I want my group to focus on is going to be goal setting. This can apply to any harrier who is interested, but for the harriers who are older or who have been running longer (the yellow group), my plan is to have them sign “goal-contracts”. At the very first practice my group will be having a goal setting session. We will be going over basic goal setting guidelines (SMART: Specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, time-bound), and I will be providing special note cards for each harrier to write their own goal and sign it. By signing the note card they are agreeing that they truly are willing to work to get to this goal. My plan is to also sign every card, stating that I will do everything that I can to help them achieve their goal. Hopefully, near the end of the season, we can revisit these note cards and evaluate how we’ve done. Their goals can be anything ranging from running a certain time to winning Regionals as an age group team or even qualifying for nationals. The only requirement is that they are SMART goals (see above).
Hopefully throughout the year we can then create “mini-goals” to guide them to this main goal, and to create some positive reinforcement along the road.
My goal, is for them to learn the benefits of setting goals in their daily or weekly routines and use their personal goals to drive them towards bigger and better things.
Stay tuned for my second post!
